IT'S JALIL HAMID

Abdul Jalil Hamid, Prime Minister's Media Supremo, has been tipped to take over the helm of The New Straits Times Press following the removal of Zainul Arifin Mohamed Isa as the Group Managing Editor.

Jalil is instrumental in advising Najib Razak on daily media exposure and it is understood that Jalil has succeeded in convincing the Prime Minister that he is the most suitable candidate to disseminate Najib's agenda through the three newspapers - New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro - under NSTP's stable.

By Friday, Zainul will make a disgraceful exit as the Group Managing Editor to join a long list of former editors who, in one way or the other, were forced out by the Power-That-Be in Putrajaya.

For the record, Zainul was appointed to his post on July 1, 2009, and by Friday, his stint ends after 2 years 3 months in the job with NST's circulation hovering around 60,000 copies a day.

AXE TO FALL ON NST EXECUTIVES

The axe will this week fall on two top executives at the New Straits Times Press.

It is long overdue. Things would have been different had the chopping came a little bit sooner. But they say it is never too late and there are many ways to save a sinking ship.

Little bird whispered that Anthony Firdauz Bujang, NSTP chief executive, and NSTP Group Managing Editor Zainul Arifin Muhammed Isa, will be booted out the latest by Friday.

Why? Dwindling sales of the New Straits Times, the flagship of the NSTP.

Little bird says NST's circulation has dipped to the lowest in the company's history and the company simply sits still watching sales falling like flies.

Come Friday, Anthony and Zainul will be made to pay the price for their poor supervision of the NST.

Some say, in public, executives are quoting the NST circulation averaging at 120,000 copies a day but in the backyard, concerned staff are implying that the figures have been inflated to prevent a slide in advertising revenues.

At one stage, they say, the NST's circulation dropped below 60,000 copies a day and the worst performer has been the New Sunday Times.

There have been talks that there would also be changes in the ranks at the editorial level but it will take place gradually with executives passing their sell dates will be told to pack up by the end of the year.

Little bird also revealed that there have been too many passengers onboard NST especially at the editorial level and the paper is suffering primarily because of these non-performers.

But there is also suggestion that the changes are politically motivated as the ruling party is preparing an all out assault on the opposition as the general election nears.

But observers say the change will not end with the removal of the two senior executives.

Changes are also expected at sister papers Berita Harian and Harian Metro and at Media Prima before we say goodbye to 2011.

As always, NST's politics brighten the lives of journalists.

A LIFE IS LOST AND THANKS TO AZEEZ RAHIM

Azeez Rahim is known for being publicity crazy. Day in day out, his picture made into the pages of most mainstream newspapers and screens of TV stations.

One way of stealing the limelights, as Azeez believes, is to organise trips overseas on the pretext of rendering humanitarian assistance.

Dropping the names of the PM and his wife Rosmah Mansor, Azeez is an untouchable Umno Supreme Council member among the editors and senior ministry officials.

Whatever he wishes, it will be granted. No Editor and no senior Government official in the right frame of mind would want to cross path with this great Umno leader.

During Dr Mahathir Mohamad's tenure, only the PM, Deputy Prime Minister and Tun Daim would get such favourable treatment from the editors.

Only these three leaders would have journalists following them around the world providing coverage. The rest including Ministers like Rafidah Aziz could only dream of having reporters jumping on the plane with them on overseas missions.

But it is a different story with Azeez. Wherever Azeez goes, the Press will have to be next to him. He went to Gaza, the Press were with him. He went to Brisbane, the whole Corps were with him. He went Auckland, the whole team was with him. Fukushima, just name it, the Press will be there for him.

Everyday and night, we were treated to pictures of him on TV and the papers. If he is in one place for 7 days, for 7 days we will have to watch him with his antics overseas.

He is larger than the PM. He is larger than Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin. He is larger than any component party presidents of the BN, he is larger than the Vice Presidents of Umno and he is larger than any Minister in Najib's Cabinet.

And he is just an Umno Supreme Council member, not a even a Minister and a former car salesman.

That is what Azeez is all about. He was expecting a bigger coverage of him in Somalia and that's why he chose the Hariraya eve to be there.

But Azeez is unlucky this time around. A Bernama TV reporter was shot dead and now Azeez is trying to wriggle out his way from this mess.

Don't blame the Somalis for this mess. Don't blame the African Union for the death. We know who must take the fall this time around.

Today we lost Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, the Bernama TV cameraman. His parents lost their lovely son. His wife lost her husband. His two tender young children lost their father.

All of them lost their beloved Noramfaizul to a half-past-six Umno politician who wanted a shot at fame.

Al-Fatihah to Allahyarham Noramfaizul.

JAKARTA POST: MALAYSIAN MEDIA VIOLATE JOURNALISM PRACTICE

"The Malaysian Government-controlled media violated every known ethical practice of journalism by providing graphic reports of the alleged “sex sojourn” without verifying the identities of the video’s subjects."

That's the opinion or rather the perception of the Indonesian media, to be specific the Jakarta Post, of Malaysian mainstream media.

In an editorial by the Jakarta Post on the alleged expose of Anwar Ibrahim's misdemeanour,  the Indonesian newspaper says:

"Typically, the source of the video was not disclosed, evoking the popular Indonesian (and Malay) saying lempar batu sembunyi tangan, which means “throw the rock, hide your hand”. No one took responsibility for screening the video, but the mainstream media played along and reported what their journalists saw. Ever willing accomplices, the media broke one of the credos of journalism: Identify your sources, especially when making allegations as serious as this."

Read the rest of the editorial at this link here:  http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2011/03/28/a-new-low-malaysian-politics.html

As a matter of fact, have Malaysian mainstream media ever been fair in its reporting?
